journey to grand canyon 2006-06-19 17:25 UTC
From the Navajo reservation, we got back on track, headed for the North Rim of the grand canyon. I didn't get many pictures of it (but will on the way back) - the road there was *long* - longer than it needed to be, but with some amazing scenery. There were more delays, including a controlled-burn forest fire that we got escorted through - wild.
Getting closer, the road crosses huge meadows and finally ends right on the rim. Wow... I used to live next to the Palo Duro canyon - the second largest in the world. The difference in size makes this a whole different thing.

an accident of some sort completely blocked I40 between Winslow and Flagstaff. We sat for 30 minutes, car off, before giving up and taking a happily closeby turnaround. Back in Winslow, we ate at the Falcon, a great diner place. We also saw 'the' corner - the locals have erected a statue there of Glenn Fry, I guess.

Even after hanging out for over an hour, the interstate was still blocked. We detoured up into the Navajo reservation and made our way around.

I fulfilled a childhood dream by getting to see Carlsbad Caverns - I used to live within a few hundred miles, but never made it there. My mental dossier of the place was filled with near-facts reported by other kids, e.g., the bottomless pit really was bottomless, and the like. We took a bunch of pictures with the 'real' camera, and I'll follow with them soon.
