finally! a decent picture of a wild monkey (I'm not the one feeding the little guy, btw). This is on the side of the road, about halfway between mumbai and pune, which is where I am now. Cell service (with data) is fine here. Maybe the monkey already has a cell phone, and that's why he's not interested in mine.
Too bad I don't have a 'real' camera with me. |

the new soph - elated and relieved |
A couple of weeks ago, we took Sophie to the zoo for the first time (she's 15 months old - says a few words, but doesn't really talk yet). For the first part of the visit, she was very uncharacteristically nervous and quiet. I wasn't sure what was wrong, but later I've come to believe that she was afraid for her life - and why wouldn't she be? That residuum of instinct that remains in us humans was telling her nonverbally (and accurately, I suppose) that those leopards and lions and wild dogs wanted to eat her for lunch!
The turning point was her ride on a carousel - on a fiberglass tiger with a pleasant smile. She had a good time, and from there went straight to the petting zoo, which was pure bliss. Was this zoo visit transformative for her? A living symbol of human triumph over the rest of the animals, along with an invitation to trust her intellect over her instinct? |

| this is one of those - oh, I haven't posted for awhile - posts. I passed on the treo 600 to my son, and we're comparing cameras. This one is a *lot* better. |

never have any money. I heard it's because they don't have pockets. |

arboretum

| There's a pretty big park near the center of Houston - Memorial Park. In the park is an arboretum with a bunch of trails. |

I like this place, but I don't think we've been here for a couple of years. Easy enough to find your way around. |
| All around is the hiss of cars on the freeway, train whistles, etc., but other than that, you'd think you were away from the city. |

This turtle let me get *real* close - no zoom on the camera phone. |
