monkey 2008-07-13 07:13 UTC

finally! a decent picture of a wild monkey (I'm not the one feeding the little guy, btw). This is on the side of the road, about halfway between mumbai and pune, which is where I am now. Cell service (with data) is fine here. Maybe the monkey already has a cell phone, and that's why he's not interested in mine.

Too bad I don't have a 'real' camera with me.

the new soph - elated and relieved
A couple of weeks ago, we took Sophie to the zoo for the first time (she's 15 months old - says a few words, but doesn't really talk yet). For the first part of the visit, she was very uncharacteristically nervous and quiet. I wasn't sure what was wrong, but later I've come to believe that she was afraid for her life - and why wouldn't she be? That residuum of instinct that remains in us humans was telling her nonverbally (and accurately, I suppose) that those leopards and lions and wild dogs wanted to eat her for lunch!

The turning point was her ride on a carousel - on a fiberglass tiger with a pleasant smile. She had a good time, and from there went straight to the petting zoo, which was pure bliss. Was this zoo visit transformative for her? A living symbol of human triumph over the rest of the animals, along with an invitation to trust her intellect over her instinct?

this is one of those - oh, I haven't posted for awhile - posts. I passed on the treo 600 to my son, and we're comparing cameras. This one is a *lot* better.
Dogs......

never have any money. I heard it's because they don't have pockets.

arboretum 2006-04-15 21:04 UTC
There's a pretty big park near the center of Houston - Memorial Park. In the park is an arboretum with a bunch of trails.
I like this place, but I don't think we've been here for a couple of years. Easy enough to find your way around.
All around is the hiss of cars on the freeway, train whistles, etc., but other than that, you'd think you were away from the city.
This turtle let me get *real* close - no zoom on the camera phone.
