dead crape myrtle 2008-09-18 00:14

bummer! This was one of two really tall crape myrtle trees that got uprooted. They had to shop at the big and tall crape myrtle store. The other one is only half uprooted, so I'm trying to talk myself into trying to save it by pulling it back upright (with some sort of big truck and bracing it. It's still alive after 5 days in that position, so I figure it's still got some good roots).

I'm all for saving trees. Did you ever see my blog about, I think, Crape Myrttles? I didn't know you had some in your yard. When I was in Atlanta last summer for training I came back talking about how I loved the crape myrtles. What color are/was yours?

one was pink flowered, the other was purple flowered. They're both cut to pieces now. I tried saving the one - I was able to pull it upright with a tow strap, then put a cable on it and connected it to a fence post, then backed up the SUV and it still stood up, then put up a ladder to retrieve the tow rope, and while I was unfastening it, the whole thing came down (slowly), worse than before. Hooked back up the tow rope and pulled, but this time the whole tree pulled forward horizontally, completing the uprooting process, and laying the tree back almost flat against the ground. Crap.

We've got another big one on the other side of the house that weathered the storm. It's got pink flowers.
