no power, week 2

Enough with the Ike posts, you say? Same here, except that without power at the house, there's not much else going on, except for clearing vegetation and waiting for the power to come back on.
Our local grid maintainer's website says we can expect for power to be restored by this Thursday, which could mean about 2 weeks without the happy electrons. Still, we made out much better than our neighbors who had trees fall on their houses, and our other neighbors who had ocean fall on their houses.
I've now logged several hours with a chain saw and still have all four limbs (but more due to luck than skill). I almost think I should have been required to take a class.

Tim just bought a chain saw and is going to cut off the dead wood from our ash tree instead of pay a company $350 to do it. Any words of wisdom for him regarding chain saw usage I'm scared for him to use it because my only semi-personal experience regarding a chain saw is of a neighbor my father helped to cut his tree in which "they" were using a chain saw and the neighbor's hand got sliced--so deep that there was no blood. No phalanges were lost and he healed up just fine...yet it's pretty serious business. You wouldn't just want to start waving that thing around. At least he's "reading" the manual.
It sucks that I have not had time to read/comment on your blog. LIfe is so busy. I hope to be back more often, and glad to hear you had neither tree nor ocean in your house! Hooray for that!

Cut wedges just like you would with an axe. Don't let the branch/trunk sag or tilt and close up on the blade - the chain will come off when you pull it free. Don't get into awkward poses to reach inaccessible places in order to save time. If you start to get tired, stop, don't keep going. You tend to get tired pretty quickly.
