ribbon mic 2008-01-26 21:41
I got about an hour to work on this chinese ribbon mic today.

Here's a mp3 using a track of electric guitar recorded before switching out the transformer.

here's the mp3
and after the switch:

Both pictures are "after" the switch. Had to pad the new transformer with a cotton ball. The original one was a little smaller and fit inside a metal chamber that attached to the top of the stalk on the bottom there.

The rebuild is headroomy and chewy with a hint of warm, smooth black walnut. That is what I heard wasn't it?

definitely sounds better -- I subsequently removed the internal windscreen over the ribbon (you can just see it at the top of the top picture) to open up the treble a little more - I think I'm done.

Coool. Would be interesting to hear a side by site of a recording made with the ribbon mic vs. a mic design we are more accustomed to.

What I found interesting was the difference between the Shure 57 mics.
